The artist Jean Sabrier, with whom I lived for many years, author in particular of the «liquid crystal», is the inaugural figure in my creative process. Immersed in the intimacy of this artist, my attention was naturally first drawn to Italian Renaissance painting; Piero de la Francesca, Masaccio, Uccello… And the work of Marcel Duchamp. Later, Caravaggio became a source of inspiration that led me to anachronistic reinterpretations into objects («Bacchus Malade», «Hommelette aux œufs»), or into installations (Erotorelief). Today, my work is centered on the question of the «Threshold» as the place of the act of creation, as a gesture linking the inside and the outside, the inner world of the painter and that of the viewer. The question of unveiling and that of the enigma are therefore central. It is by returning to the contribution of Leon Batista Alberti, who argued that the painting or fresco is a frame, a window, open to the world (a world) and its history (1436, De Pictura), that I understand my relationship to painting. For me, retinal art is not dead, contrary to what Marcel Duchamp announced. Taking up his theory on the «infra-thin», I make the following suggestion: «it is possible to accept and acknowledge one's debt to the history of art, to past and present artists, while at the same time contributing one's own creative part with micro variations of representations. Here the singularity of these small «steps of meaning» («pas de sens «in French) lies in this narrow space, this threshold that allows difference and repetition according to their articulation. It is therefore not a question of rupture but of an evolving continuity with what I like. So everything is played out in a tenuous space. This tenuousness thus becomes the «in-itself» motif of the creation. The term «evolving» is important because it gives a central role to movement, that of the aphanisis of the subject, that of the creative act, that of the «swirling» life drive. Besides, as Jean-Christophe Bailly says: «Indeed, the image always comes second, it can only be an image of something: as it has often been said, it is this simultaneity of an existence and a reference to existence that intertwines non-being and being, presence and absence in the image (especially in relation to the portrait). The result is both a movement (being comes out of itself, something has come out of being) and a stagnation (what has come out lays merely floating. We are faced with something intangible, something that slips away but that at the same time is held in a fixity). » From this, it is possible to perceive that the act of creation is situated on this tenuous threshold between «being» and «non-being», between the artist's gesture and its representation, between the unconscious intention (Ogni dipintore dipinge se) of the painter and the viewer. The latter is called upon to experience the imperceptible by cultivating the slowness and delay of his perception, an experience of the threshold as a representation of an ephemeral temporal «in-between». «To paint is always to show the fire under the ashes» Jean-Marie Pontevia «La peinture masque et miroir», «Écrits sur l'art et pensées détachées», published by William Blake & Co. 1981. My paintings are first and foremost representations of «visions» and of an inner world that emerges from my readings, my writings and my reflections, notably around the question of the unconscious and its effects on the creative process. It is sometimes surprising to see images emerge from complex thoughts, which they seem to skilfully simplify and concentrate to the essential. My work as a painter cannot therefore do without the initial test of words and the language that structures them. I also greatly care about the manual aspect of painting and the feeling it provokes, constantly seeking to improve my gesture, like a craftsman would do. This gives me great satisfaction. |
