1. Schedel's Map of the World 1493:
Liber Chronicarum, Chronicle of the World, Nuremberg Chronicle, Schedel'sche Weltchronik.

One of the earliest obtainable printed world maps at all; it shows the three at that time known parts of the world. The border contains twelve dour windblowers while the map is supported in three of it's corners by the solemn figures of Japhet, Shem and Ham. The map reflects Ptolemy's understanding of the world as three continents separated by a vast ocean from the west coast of Europe to the coast of Asia. This original world map is from the latin edition, which was printed on July 12th, 1493.

2. Condition:

Originally colored. Upper right and left corner are repaired with japanese silk. Slightly stained and age toned (please take a look at the pictures).

Otherwise in very good condition. See certificate above.

3. Generally:

The latin edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle, «Liber Chronicarum», was published on July 12th, 1493. Publisher was the famous Nuremberg humanist and physican Hartmann Schedel. Printed by Anton Koberger at Nuremberg. With more than 1.800 woodcuts, the Chronicle of the World is one of the most important documents of early book printing in the late middle ages. The woodcuts were made by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Further it's also very possible that the young Albrecht Dürer, who worked as a trainee at Michael Wolgemuts workshop till 1490, was involved in.

1. Weltkarte aus der Schedel'schen Weltchronik von 1493:
Liber Chronicarum, Chronicle of the World, Nuremberg Chronicle.

Eine der ältesten gedruckten Weltkarten überhaupt; sie zeigt die damals drei bekannten Erdteile. An den Grenzen zwölf Windbläser, Darstellung der drei Stammväter Europas, Asiens und Afrikas: Japhet, Sem und Cham. Die Karte wurde auf Basis des kartographischen Systems der Ptolemäer gefertigt. Der Text läßt offen, ob die Erde eine Kugel oder eine Scheibe ist. Exemplar aus der lateinischen Ausgabe vom 12. Juli 1493. Prachtvolles Kolorit; absolute Rarität! Rrr

Bei dieser Karte handelt es sich um ein Original aus dem 15. Jahrhundert in einem hochwertigen Holzrahmen auf zweifachem Passepartout.

2. Zustand:

Obere linke und rechte Ecke mit Japanseide repariert, Mittelfalz verstärkt (siehe Foto Gegenlicht). Insgesamt sehr guter Gesamtzustand einer Original-Weltkarte aus der lateinischen Ausgabe der Schedel'schen Weltchronik von 1493.

Gerahmt: 93cm X 72.5cm



3. Allgemeines:

Die lateinsichen Ausgabe der Schedel'schen Weltchronik erschien am 12. Juli 1493. Herausgegeben von dem berühmten Nürnberger Humanisten und Historiker Hartmann Schedel. Gedruckt von Anton Koberger zu Nürnberg. Mit über 1800 Holzschnitte ist die Schedel Chronik ein bedeutendes Zeugnis deutscher Buchdruckkunst des Spätmittelalters. Die Holzschnitte stammen von Michael Wolgemut und Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Auch Beiträge des junge Albrecht Dürer, welcher bis 1490 als Lehrling in der Werkstatt Michael Wolgemuts arbeitete, sind wahrscheinlich.
