Oil on stretched cotton canvas. This is the famous Stag Rock at Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight, the legend goes that in the late 1700s a hunt was pursuing a Stag which leaped from the cliff onto this rock to avoid the hounds. This is not inconceivable as you have to remember that the rock used to be a lot closer to the cliff. One can only surmise why the neighbouring rock is know as Mermaid rock!
