A park near Bel Air, md is home to the Maryland Farm Extension 4-h program. They raise chickens and have barns for 4-h students to learn about cattle, pigs, horses etc. There is even a garden where they raise a variety of vegetables. Also, the park is beautiful and has this wonderful view of the Chesapeake Bay.
While painting on site - luckily I remembered to bring my camera and took some shots of the chickens and roosters that live there. Animals seldom stay still long enough for you to include them in a painting except as a suggestion of the animal or bird. A couple of the roosters were quite full of themselves and I thought that maybe I could use one of them in a painting.
This painting came about because of the rooster photo and looking for a still life subject. I own a set of chicken salt cellars - a quirky thought struck me about a rooster falling for a ceramic chicken.
