'Hare in the field’
The European hare/Brown hare Lepus europaeus 21.5 X 30 cm, 8.46 X 11.8 inches, Pencil, Watercolor, Acrylic, Acrylic gloss gel medium on 300gms not watercolor paper. This is a continuation of my Modus Operandi lately where I've been playing around with a kind of vintage wildlife illustration/painting style. I have kept seeing these amazing old pictures of animals and birds, particularly etchings and illustrations for books eta by artists back in the day. To me there is a certain mystique to the old naturalist works, an air of excitement and intrigue in the field of naturalism and its accompanying Illustration of newly discovered species, particularly in the at times imaginative and even inaccurate portrayals of new world fauna and flora which is perhaps lacking in more recent work due to the fact we now have beautiful close up photography for artists to base their depictions on, and an obviously greater knowledge of the animal kingdom. But certainly in the interim we have lost some of its foreign otherworldly mystery.
