Hail Britannia. Peter Melonas Peter Melonas
Sherlock Holmes is mentioned smoking a clay pipe sometimes, it's referred to as a'black'clay pipe. Doyle has Holmes smoking the clay most often; six stories have him puffing away, when in a pensive mood. While there were, pipes made of black clay, it is likely his pipe was originally white clay, and became blackened with heavy use. Holmes uses a piece of hot coal from the fireplace to light the pipe which could be expected to darken a white pipe. He smoked a black clay pipe and an old English briar pipe. Arthur Conan Doyle's writings mentions Holmes smoking three kinds of pipes: a black or dirty, oily clay pipe; an old briar; and a long Cherrywood. A curved pipe for Holmes because it allows one to speak while smoking the pipe, as the leverage is better: a straight-stemmed pipe puts strain on the teeth, making clear speech on the stage nearly impossible and requires the hands to move toward the face to hold it.
